Vet Tip

10 tips that veterinarians wish every owner knew.

1. Pay attention to your dog's regular activities. The best way to catch health problems early is to know what is normal for your pet. Are they eating at a normal pace? Are they drinking frequently, are they urinating frequently? Are they quieter than usual?

2. Feed a high quality dog food. This does not necessarily mean high-protein or high-calorie.  recommended foods

3. Avoid over feeding and giving table scraps.

4. Socialize your puppy. Follow up with your obedience exercises until 1 to 2 years of age.

5. Keep your dog clean and well groomed. Clean dogs are more comfortable and easier to keep indoors. This will make skin problems easier to spot.

6. Give your dog plenty of exercise. Take them jogging, play fetch, play with other dogs. A big yard does not inspire your dog to exercise any more than the exercise bicycle in the garage inspires you to exercise.

7. Keep in touch with your veterinarian. Bring your dog in for annual exams and other preventive procedures. When in doubt call or bring your dog in for a consultation.

8. Practice examining your pets entire body. Remember the ears, teeth & feet. Try to make it as positive as it can possibly be (lots of treats & praise).

9. Keep the mouth & teeth clean. Dental accessories

10. Plan ahead for veterinarian expenses. The typical pet owner spends about $150 a year on vet bills.
