Search & Rescue Tip

Goal: “The show me Indication”

This will teach your dog step by step the process of

1st: finding the subject (person)
2nd: returning to the handler
3rd: and reaproaching the subject (person) to show the handler where the find is located.

This technique is the foundation for your future search & rescue training.

Requirements:

1. A fun attitude
2. You and one helper
3. Favorite reward (toy or food)
4. Quite setting (no distractions)
5. A solid Recall (an impeccable come command)

Training Steps:

1. Start by holding your dog by the collar.
2. Have the helper show the treat or toy to your dog.
3. The helper runs out from the dog (a short distance at first) in a fun exciting manner.
4. When the helper stops, command your dog “search” and release the collar.
5. The moment your dog reaches the helper have them release the treat/toy.
6. Call your dog back to you.
7. Leash your dog and command “show me”. Have the helper waving another toy or treat to gain the attention of your dog.
8. Run with your dog as they lead you to the helper.
9. Celebrate like there is no tomorrow when you have reached the helper. (A whole lot of praise and reward.)
